Since 2005, new homes in Victoria must be built to a 5 Star energy efficiency standard and now alterations and additions are subject to the same standards. 

The 5 Star standard is performance-based rather than prescriptive, allowing designers, builders and home-owners flexibility and choice on how to design and construct a 5 Star home e.g.;

• Better orientation to the sun
• Increased wall, ceiling and floor insulation
• Improved window protection to stop heat transferring in or out
• Improved sealing of airflow points to prevent air leakage and assist draft control
• Higher performance windows, including double glazing
• Using five-star rated heating and hot water systems
• Using energy efficient cooling systems
• WERS rated sanitary fittings and tapware.
