The brief to the architect was to provide an extension to enrich the owner’s lives in their retirement and add value to the original Victorian home. It was to have a north facing kitchen – living – veranda to capture the distant views over Castlemaine and the hills beyond, a conservatory, ensuite with sloping shower floor, a period bathroom to match an existing coffin bath, heating and cooling through out.
The project was to be as environmentally sensitive as possible; this included placing bladder tanks beneath the floor, due to lack of space on the property. The tank was connected to a rain bank and switches to mains water when the tank gets low. A grey water system was installed to save valuable water going down the drain.
When the chimney was being demolished it disappeared into the ground below. On investigation it was found to be a cellar. The sub floor was changed to accommodate this find and was cleaned, waterproofed, painted and given a trapdoor with struts and is now an exciting part of the new extension.
